Extend the boom to reach into a boat, and the rated capacity drops — significantly on some models. The 2-ton hoist happened to be fine for my engine at the extension I needed. But if I'd bought the 1-ton model thinking the number on the box applied at every position, I could have ended up with a dropped engine, a bent boom, or worse. The manual wasn't confusing. I just didn't read it.

Camel bar light: the amperage tells the truth

I ordered a camel bar light for the shop truck — LED, 180 watts, 12,000 lumens, according to the listing.

The unit that arrived had "camel" printed on the side, but the amperage draw told a different story: 4.1 amps at 12.8 volts. That's roughly 52 watts. Not 180. Simple math: watts divided by volts equals amps. If a 180W bar is only drawing 4.1A, the bar isn't 180W. It went back the same week. The math doesn't lie. Listings and boxes do.

"What is the RF gain on a CB radio?" — a question I should have asked sooner

A customer standing at my counter asked me that while renting one of our off-road vehicles with a CB radio. I gave him a vague answer, then realized I didn't actually know myself.

RF gain controls how much the receiver amplifies incoming signals. It doesn't change your transmit power — that's fixed at 4 watts AM under FCC Part 95 rules. RF gain only affects what you hear.   1. Photograph the old unit — model, serial, connector type.
  2. Pull the manufacturer's compatibility matrix before ordering, not after.
  3. Confirm firmware language and regional locking.
  4. Check the hoist's load chart at the exact extension needed.
  5. Do the wattage math on any "high-power" accessory. Watts ÷ volts = amps.
  6. Read the RF gain section of any radio manual before touching the knobs.

Nothing in that list is clever. It's just the stuff I was too head-down to do the first time.

In the 18 months since I started using it, the checklist has caught 47 potential errors. I counted. At an average of $170 per mistake, that's about $8,000 in avoided rework. For 20 minutes of verification per order.

So glad I made that call. And so glad I canceled that gray-market order before it shipped. If I'd gone through with it, this article would have a very different ending.

One caveat: my experience is based on about 200 orders across cars and boats in a 4-year window. If you're running luxury yachts or heavy commercial fleets, your situation might differ. But the pattern — verify first, buy second — doesn't care about the industry.
